Over the years I’ve made an effort to have creative endeavors that are separate from my work as a graphic designer. Something hands-on (non-digital). A combination of these personal explorations evolved into the collage pieces that you see here.
Beyond the personal satisfaction of doing this work, I found myself asking the question “What does the art mean to me?” Looking back at the work, collectively, the answer seemed obvious – and it is ultimately true of my life – I seek and crave simplicity. I am the happiest when I consciously enjoy the moment – making my daughter laugh – dancing with my wife in the living room – a good beer and a book. Simple things bring me joy and I try to convey that feeling of simplicity in my work.
I was born in Sanford, North Carolina, a small town 35 miles southwest of Raleigh. My mother, Marsha Grant, was an artist, art teacher, and graphic designer. Her paintings on the walls, a potter’s wheel on the back porch, visiting museums and galleries – Art was prevalent during my formative years, and continues to be a force in my everyday life. Somewhat following in her footsteps, I’ve been working professionally as a graphic designer for 20+ years. I’ve been showing my collage work professionally since 2009.
My wife, Carly, and I moved to Asheville, NC in 2003. Like most of the people that live here, we simply fell in love and felt drawn to this city. An abundance of art, culture, food, nature, genuinely happy people – and so much more. It’s a very special place and we’re lucky to call it home. Our family grew in 2011 with the birth of our daughter, Emaline.
